Those with symptoms of GERD and who are unsuccessful with over the counter or prescription medications mat benefit from this new and exciting treatment for GERD, all performed without incisions.

What is GERD?
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a serious form of acid reflux that can cause long-term complications if left untreated.  While occasional acid reflux, also called gastroesophageal reflux (GER), is a common problem for many, persistent reflux that occurs more than twice a week is considered GERD and should be treated.

What are the Symptoms of GERD?
Acid reflux occurs when the valve in the esophagus that keeps digested food and stomach acids down remains open.  In adults, this usually causes heartburn or acid indigestion, a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, chest or throat.
Children with GER or GERD may instead exhibit one or more of the following:

  • dry coughsymptoms of asthma                       •  drooling
  • sore throat                                                           •  hoarseness
  • picky eating                                                         •  trouble swallowing

Infants who spit up regularly and are irritable, feed poorly, arch their backs as if in pain, and have poor sleep habits may be suffering from GERD.

What is the Treatment for GERD?
Certain lifestyle changes can improve the symptoms of GERD, including avoiding the following foods:

  • acidic foods like citrus and tomatoes            •  mint flavorings
  • spicy food                                                           •  fried and fatty foods
  • alcohol and caffeine                                         •  chocolate
  •
Maintaining a healthy weight, remaining upright after eating, and eating smaller meals can ease symptoms as well.  If symptoms persist, medications can be prescribed, and in very serious cases, surgery may be required.
